Metalsa in Botetourt County and Metalsa Central Worldwide has achieved Zero Waste status. Metalsa Roanoke Inc., a plant in Botetourt County, VA, has partnered with GFL Environmental and Wisdom Environmental, Covanta Environmental Solutions, and Environmental Options to reduce the waste going to our county landfill and is pleased to announce that their Botetourt County Plant is now a Zero Waste facility. This location, situated in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, will be the first Zero Waste facility for Metalsa.
To celebrate this prestigious status, Metalsa Roanoke will be holding a celebration on Monday, October 10, 2022, at 2 pm at theirplant located at 184 Vista Dr., Roanoke, VA 24019. The event is open to the public.
The zero waste-to-landfill program was set into motion in March of 2022 and became part of the plant's standard programs in May. This is a plant-wide program that includes every department within the plant where all material will be recycled or used as a waste to energy. All Metalsa Roanoke general trash will now be going to Covanta in Northern Virginia to an insinuator plant to be used as waste to energy instead of going to the county landfill. All recyclables will be handled by GFL, and all non-general trash will be handled by Environmental Options and be used as waste to energy instead of going to the county landfill. All the plants shot dust and spent shot will be handled by Wisdom Environmental in Indiana and turned into steel creet (a form of concrete). Congratulations Metalsa!
It's also important to note that in 2020, Roanoke Cement Company announced that its Troutville campus was awarded Gold certification under the TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) rating system. Administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), TRUE helps facilities define, pursue and achieve zero waste goals while becoming more resource efficient.
We are so proud of the companies in Botetourt County leading the way in making our world a cleaner place!
