Dog Licenses

Licensing Your Dog Is the Law

According to State Law, all dogs 4 months old or older are required to display a current annual county license. Botetourt County now offers a lifetime dog license (PDF), which is valid for the life of the dog as long as the rabies vaccination remains current.

License Application

The price for a lifetime license is $10.

Purchasing a Dog License

This application is for new residents or current residents who have not purchased a lifetime license. Applications must be accompanied by a copy of the current rabies certificate.

Important: The rabies certificate(s) must be valid on the day of purchase. Your dog license is only good if the dog's rabies vaccination remains up to date. There is no refund should you cease ownership of the dog in any way. The tag must be worn by the dog while running or roaming at large. For information about animal licensing and other ordinances affecting animals, contact the Animal Control Officer.

To obtain a dog license, you must:

  • Provide a certificate of current rabies vaccination
  • Pay the $10 license fee to Botetourt County

Licenses can be purchased by following methods:

  • Via Mail: Mail a copy of the Rabies Certificate or the Application for Botetourt County Dog Tag letter.
  • In-Person: You may purchase a dog license in person at the Treasurer's Office.
