Utility-Scale Wind Energy Ordinance: Development and Process

Winter 2014 - The Botetourt County Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission directed staff to begin researching and developing the basic outline of a utility-scale wind energy ordinance

January 2015 - A work session was held by the Planning Commission to receive an introduction to and an overview of utility-scale wind energy.

February 2015 - Joint work session of the Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission to discuss proposed provisions of a draft utility-scale wind energy ordinance.

April 2015 - Second joint work session of the Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission to receive follow-up information from staff regarding a proposed draft utility-scale wind energy ordinance.

April 2015 - Public forum to receive input regarding the components of the proposed draft utility-scale wind energy ordinance.

May 2015 - Planning Commission reviewed comments from the public comment survey and authorized a public hearing on the proposed ordinance for June 8, 2015. Board of Supervisors reviewed comments from the public comment survey and authorized a public hearing on the proposed ordinance for June 23, 2015.

June 2015 - The Planning Commission held a public hearing on the ordinance on June 8. The Commission recommended approval of the ordinance. The Board of Supervisors held a public hearing and adopted the ordinance on June 23.

In 2011, 27,000 players, spectators and officials visited the Botetourt Sports Complex. 27,000 drinks, 13,000 sandwiches, 13,000 snacks and 3,300 hot beverages were sold. Recycling efforts doubled from 255 bags to 478.
